What Makes the Best Reviews Different (For Customers Writing Them)

If you're reading this post because you want to write a more useful review, the principles are simple:

Be specific. Name the dish, the service, the staff member, the room, the actual outcome. Specifics are what convert.

Tell a small story. Even three sentences that move from problem to action to resolution beats two paragraphs of generic praise.

Address the worry the next person has. What were you nervous about before this experience? Speak to that. Most people considering this business are nervous about the same things.

Use real names. "Maria at the front desk" is dramatically more credible than "the staff."

Include honest texture. It's okay to mention something that wasn't perfect — it makes the praise more believable.

Keep it scannable. Short paragraphs, line breaks, no walls of text.

That's it. A great review takes three to five minutes to write and helps strangers make a decision they're trying to make.

What This Means for Businesses Asking for Reviews

If you're a business reading this for inspiration on what to encourage when you ask customers for reviews:

Don't tell customers what to write. Coaching crosses Google's policies and reads as manipulation. The reviews coached customers write are also generally weaker than the ones they'd write organically.

Do prompt for stories rather than ratings. A request that says "we'd love to hear how it went, in your own words" gets more story-rich reviews than a generic "would you mind leaving a review."

Do ask at moments of peak emotion. Reviews written when the experience is fresh and the customer is satisfied are dramatically more story-rich than reviews written weeks later.

Do ask after real successes. The recovery story, the saved-the-day moment, the multi-week project that wrapped beautifully — these are the moments that produce reviews that actually convert future prospects.
